Variety spoke to showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen about losing Lincoln and WardHive, the future of Fitz. Simmons and whats ahead for the show in Season 4 following that time jump. Brett Dalton has certainly gone through the wringer over the past three seasons with Hive being obliterated, are we finally losing him for goodTancharoen In the Marvel universe, you can never say that you lose anyone for good our entire series is centered around a man who was brought back from the dead. But we sustained Brett Daltons character as an antagonist for the past three seasons and thats just a testament to how much we love and respect the actor as well as what hes given to the character. ZaLeJLSM8YIVNEhVGBDBGKpUL.jpg' alt='Shield Season 1 Episode 12' title='Shield Season 1 Episode 12' />But as with everything, we dont want any story to ever lose steam we dont want any characters arc to ever lose steam. We felt like we could give Grant WardHive his glorious ending that he deserved, because Grant Ward essentially died halfway through Season 3, but we didnt want to let go. Why did you decide to sacrifice Lincoln, out of all the possibilitiesWhedon The idea of sacrificing someone came up in talking about how to give WardHive a glorious end. We didnt want it to be just a victory, because you feel connected to Ward and to Brett as an actor he was the first person we ever shot on the pilot, and so we wanted to give him a sort of poetic and worthy death, so we started talking about someone making the true heros sacrifice play, and in rattling around that idea, we landed on Lincoln because we find that theres something sort of beautiful about someone doing the truly heroic act because they dont believe that theyre a hero. He thinks the other people need to stay around to do good, so hes doing it because he doesnt think hes a hero and in doing that, he becomes the ultimate hero. We loved that. And then theres obviously the connection to Daisy and the emotional impact itll have on her, and the idea of him being a lost soul finally finding his purpose, all these things sort of led to. She kept her distance from people she grew up through the foster care system where she kept feeling like she was being either abandoned or hurting others, and in the events of our season finale and everything that led up to it, I think she has not only guilt but shame, so she has once again isolated herself. Whedon But we also wanted to show that she did not curl up into a ball shes clearly isolating herself, but also leaving a wake of destruction. And how much good shes doing as opposed to how much destruction shes causing, well wait and see, but I think you can tell from her interaction with the little girl that shes trying to make good on her promise to help Inhumans and trying to. But its also a progression of. So now our next progression is whats beyond humanity, and what if you can take those choices into your own hands what will happen then Tancharoen I think over the course of the three seasons, weve been exploring what is possibly the next step in human evolution constantly, and with the introduction of Radcliffe as someone whos already exploring that next step. And its also very much a part of our real world right now, body modification is a huge part of popular culture, so its our way of opening up that world within the world of SHIELD. Does that mean we can expect John Hannah to be a major presence in Season 4 Tancharoen Yeah, it would really be a bummer to see him just disappear. We hoped at the end of this year to put them in that position. We have to move on to a new thing and I think were trying to give them a relationship thats based on a friendship, which is what we loved about them initially, but as they move forward, I think things will find themselves to be much more complicated than that. Tancharoen Our relationships on the show dont really fare very well. We have many examples, Coulson and Rosalind, May and Andrew, Daisy and Ward and Lincoln. But now we see in the flashforward that hes no longer Director, so were returning him, as we are with Daisy, a little bit to where we started. Hes in the field as Agent Coulson how that changes the game or changes how he operates, well have to wait and see. Heres an example of changing. We didnt know we were going to fall in love with Ruth Negga the way we did as Raina. She came in for episode five but we thought Shes cool and so we brought her back. So what would have been somebody else became her, and as we fell in love with her character, we wrote more and more to that. Richards was going to be Deathlok but we didnt know we were going to care about him as much as we did. We knew the kind of person we wanted to bring in as The Clairvoyant and we knew we wanted a mislead so we brought in Victoria Hand. The fact that Bill Paxton worked out was fantastic. Youre going to write that character in a certain way because of who the actor is, so that changes, but we did know we were going to introduce The Clairvoyant, that we were going to introduce he was Hydra and then use that to reveal Ward. Those were things we knew loosely. Jeffrey Bell, executive producer, on the evolving nature of characters and story lines throughout the season. Jed Whedon said on this,. To have it happen in the middle of your first season is an interesting kind of riddle. The writers worked to establish a. The Bus includes such features as a soundproof interrogation room, a forensics and research lab located on the lower deck, where Fitz and Simmons work, and a cargo hold directly outside the lab where the team parks its SUV and Lola, Coulsons prized 1. Corvette. That has to be very believable. I think the hardest part is doing the actual stunts, the stunt fighting. Thats a whole other thing. Im not really punching out the stunt guy, nor are they hitting me, so its learning this dance, really, within the fight. Its how to pull back, how to take a hit and make it look real. For instance, it was a challenge keeping Samuel L. Jacksons cameo in. Kevin Lingenfelser started the season focused on 2. D supervising, but took over as lead in house visual effects supervisor after episode eight from David Altenau. Two separate production management and creative teams were established to work on the show, with most of the episodes being worked on concurrently, either two or three at a time. The digital model used in the series was designed and created by Fuse. FX. For the Bus, Altenau explained that it. This includes an extra wing and engines in the rear giving the plane the ability to operate vertically for take offs and landings, and even mid flight u turns. Fuse. FX was given the opportunity to design the Bus. The design included many features from the start, such as the ability to do vertical take offs and landing. Fuse. FX designed the Bus, and. Half a dozen 8k maps make up the details on the plane which allows the camera to get right up to the surface of the plane without any loss of detail. A very complex rig controls every aspect of the plane from the landing gear, engine transformation, doors opening, lighting and even the wings have flex controls for the animators to sell the weight of this massive aircraft. When the engines are in vertical flight mode they have several degrees of rotation which gives the jet a lot of maneuvering ability. When Coulson needs it, the wheels rotate into a horizontal position, exposing hidden jet engine ducts that create lifting thrust through the rims of the tires, which double as turbo fan blades. We worked closely with production to help design the mechanism and the look of the hovercraft engines. Its Stark technology designed to be consistent with the period aspect of the car. Occasionally, Fuse. FX was required to use a fully digital model of the car, which matches the real vehicle precisely. It will please Marvel fans, I think. It needs to be its own thing. It needs to be adjacent. What does S. H. I. E. L. D. And that, to me, is that theyre not superheroes, but they live in that universe. Even though theyre a big organization, that. Regarding the synergy the show has with addressing events from the films, Loeb said. The characters face the Hydra issue head on, while experiencing trust issues within themselves. Jed Whedon added that the Hydra element, which the show could not mention until after the release of The Winter Soldier in order to avoid spoiling the film, also attempts to address the lack of characters from the comics, a complaint fans had throughout the season, while also tying established threats such as the Clairvoyant, Project Centipede, and Deathlok, back into Hydra.
