Myself, Peggy Lawrence and Jenny when we first came to Mt Hart in 1. When I first came to Mt Hart at the end of 1. Mt Hart homesteads was extremely run down. It had been in receivership with Elders for 3 years and only the bare minimum had been spent on the place. There was only the original homestead here which was semi derelict, an old ramshackled building known back then as the old canteen or mess, the managers house which was also derelict, and a couple of sheds. C. A. L. M conservation and land management of Western Australia now known as D. E. C Department of Environment and conservation had declassified Mt Hart as a viable cattle station and took over the property turning it into a conservation estate. I negotiated with C. A. L. M D. E. C in order to set up a tourist business out here, under a contract of services licensing agreement. The original semi derelict old homestead when I came here had no door frames, no window frames, bare concrete floors and whitewashed walls. Heres the original homestead in 1. No two window frames or door frames were the same size, so each one had to be made individually and then flyscreened. The original homestead could only take 5 people, so with the approval of Allen Grosse District Manager of the West Kimberley for C. A. L. M I renovated the house adding more rooms so that it could finally house 1. I also added on a stone sitting room. Heres the stone sitting room I built. Heres what the outside of the stone sitting room looks like now. Each one of these granite blocks for the stone sitting room came from 5. Heres me taking a smoko break in between carting rocks for the stone sitting room and building the stone walls back in 1. It took me 3 years to restore the original homestead and convert it so it was suitable for guest accommodation. Heres what the inside of the building looked like during restoration. Heres what the inside of this building looks like now. After this, with the approval of C. A. L. M I set about building the dining room. I gutted the derelict canteen keeping the existing roof. Here I am back in the early 9. This is what the inside of the restaurant looks like now. Then I laid the cement slab, erected the tin and steel walls and all that took me around 8 months to do. In latter years I bought tiles and tiled paved the whole dining room. This is the old canteen looked like from the outside when I started working on it. This is what the old canteen looked like from the outside prior to renovation. This is the restaurant today. This is what the restuarant or dining room looks like from the outside now. Over the years I have gradually extended extensively renovated the kitchen adjoining the dining room. Once again mostly at my own expense with the approval of Allen Grosse the then district manager of C. A. L. M. Here are some photos of a chippie I employed helping me renovate the kitchen halfway through renovation. Here is a photo of the kitchen today. And then I built paid for the construction, and did all the work in putting an office on the side of the dining room. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 3 Episode 7 on this page. This is the office prior to its construction. Heres a photo of me in the process of constructing the office. This is the office as it is today. I got all that done and then with C. A. L. Ms help we built a new homestead. So now we were able to take 2. C. A. L. M put up the majority of funds to build the new homestead. Myself and a group of contracted labourers built the frame, put on the roof, poured the cement slab, built the walls with a team of men. Once that was all done off all the labourers went and I was left to finish off render the walls with cement, paint the walls, wire the whole thing, put up flyscreens around the verandah, and finish it all off ready to start the tourist season, once again all at my own expense. Then I also converted a 2 bedroom demountable into a cottage, so now the place could accommodate 2. The bar originally came from the mangrove hotel in Broome. Ken Fitzgerald the owner of the mangrove at the time said if I could get it down in 3 days I could have it. So I paid for a contractor, and Allen Grosse and Henry from C. A. L. M helped him take the bar down. I paid for the materials to be transported out here from Broome to Derby and then Derby to Mt Hart. And then I reassembled the bar once again Allen Grosse and Henry came out for a couple of days to help me make a start on reassembling the bar. In between all of this I was doing up my house. Now this building was just about derelict. It used to be the old head stockmens quarters.
